The Advanosys Security and Automation Technology (ASAT) team highly recommends the implementation of duress emergency notification technology in virtually all applications. This equipment now comes in all variations to initiate a precise response by a dedicated security team, be it on campus or dispatch from our UL-listed central station, to respond in a duress type application. The duress definition varies depending upon the type of facility — institutions in a banking or retail facility refer to this as a “hold-up” that usually initiating a completely silent or no onsite awareness signal so that a perpetrator will be unaware of its’ activation, “duress” is sometimes utilized in the opposite need where the site does requires the use of sounders or activating lights to notify an area or personnel that a duress or emergency event has occurred.
Along with the other services and technologies we have listed here, there is a similar application known as “emergency evacuation” or “emergency communications ” systems that serve a similar purpose. The implementation of a known location and activation device for all authorized personnel and/or in a general population or campus to have direct access to initiate the notification of an appropriate emergency responders to an invasive event. Think of this as the fire alarm pull station for emergency events not fire related. The receipt of the duress or emergency notification activation is received by the dedicated response team, whether that might be the campus or building security force, or via our UL-listed central station dispatch to the local police department. The responders are given the exact location of initiation and can respond based on the definition of the signal that was received. When possible, it is recommended that the other interrelated security technologies, including video cameras, are directly linked to view the area where a duress or emergency signal is initiated. This allows for our central station or another assigned emergency team to have an immediate, live view of the area where the event was initiated and give responders the ability to look into the entire facility for review of all activity.
Using our Totus emergency lighting systems TOTUS-Campus-Wide-Applications1 the exterior lighting apparatus is interlinked with the rest of security control equipment. A duress activation in any given area, from a fixed button or that of an individual’s cell phone, can initiate an immediate flashing of the light post nearest to the activation, along with their inherent built-in cameras to identify to all the location of emergency request and monitor current activity in real-time.
